Hi Khadija, can you tell us a bit about your art background?
My journey in art began at NCA, Lahore, where I pursued an undergraduate degree in ceramic design. It was a transformative experience that solidified my passion for art and design. My time there laid the foundation for my unique style and approach to art.
What mediums do you work with, and which artists have inspired you?
I work with a diverse range of mediums, including acrylic, collage, modeling paste, miniature sculpture, and dry oil pastels. My art has been profoundly inspired by artists like Helen Frankenthaler for her innovative use of color. Her work resonated with me deeply, guiding me toward the ethereal and pastel-driven abstracts that I create today.
What was the concept behind your solo show?
My solo show was a visual memoir of my time in Paris. Each piece was inspired by real-life events and images that left an indelible mark on me during that period. It was an intimate portrayal of my experiences, emotions, and the transformative power of a city that deeply influenced my artistic vision.
You are a successful food entrepreneur. Most artists continue their art practice after graduation; you choose a different path. Can you tell us more about it?
While art is a profound expression of my inner self, my love for food and the intricate craft behind it has always been a parallel passion. Pursuing an MBA in luxury brand management, with a focus on food and wine in Paris, was a conscious decision to marry my love for art and food. The two restaurants I’ve opened reflect European inspirations, both in cuisine and ambiance. My background in art played a pivotal role in curating an unforgettable experience for diners, right from the interiors to the paintings I personally crafted.
How important is it for artists to have a distinctive style?
Having a distinctive style is paramount for an artist. It’s not just about differentiating oneself from others, but it’s about having a unique voice and perspective in the vast world of art. A distinctive style resonates with viewers, evoking emotions and creating connections that transcend words. It’s like a signature, a part of the artist’s identity, and it’s what makes their work unforgettable.”
